Productivity refers to different measures of the efficiency of a manufacturing system. Many times, a productivity measure is defined as the rate at which an individual output is multiplied by an input, either an individual output or a single input used in a manufacturing process. The overall output (output/input) is the sum of all the outputs over the course of a manufacturing system. Each individual output can be broken down into its own output unit, such as a unit of weight, a unit of distance, or a unit of time.

The concept of productivity is generally used in the context of manufacturing, where efficiency in a given production process is important. An output is defined as an amount of product that is produced in a given time (units of time are usually measured in seconds, minutes, hours, or days). In a manufacturing process, one output unit usually includes a machine, and the other output units may include raw materials, workers, and so on. Production is the process of converting raw materials, such as wood, into a usable form, such as paper. The finished product is a useful material, or product that has been sold.

Production processes involve two kinds of productivity, namely, cost productivity and labor productivity. The former refers to the reduction of total costs over the lifetime of a manufacturing system, including the purchase of raw materials and the maintenance of a manufacturing system over time. Labor productivity, on the other hand, refers to how efficiently workers do their jobs over time and in relation to the production of goods.

Productive industries are the ones that are considered to be producing something at a rate that is less than its required rate (unit productivity). This is sometimes referred to as waste productivity. Waste productivity, in fact, is often used as the basis for measuring the productivity of a manufacturing process and determining whether a given process should be made more efficient.

In addition to the efficiency, a manufacturing process must also be able to provide desired results in a timely manner. It is the ability of a manufacturing system to produce a product in a timely manner that determines the success of a company. The main factors that are considered in evaluating a manufacturing process are: the quality of goods produced, the availability of raw materials, the ability to obtain the necessary equipment, and tools, and resources required to make a manufacturing process run smoothly and last but not least, the willingness and ability of the owner or business owner to invest in the product.
